Dear Dr. The Honourable Navinchandra Ramgoolam,
I am shocked to learn that hundreds of monkeys are being killed in Mauritius by the primate breeding company Noveprim Ltd. This slaughter is due to continue through October and November, involving adult males weighing over 4kg (because they are not the right weight for laboratories) as well as pregnant females and young monkeys who are considered ‘surplus’ to requirements.
Photographs showing dead monkeys stacked in piles on the floor or dumped in bins like garbage are very distressing. You must realise the negative impact these killings will have upon Mauritius's international reputation. I will certainly not be taking a holiday in Mauritius while this cruelty continues.
I urge the Government of Mauritius to take immediate action to end this slaughter and ensure that these unwanted monkeys are released into the wild where they belong to live out the rest of their lives freely.
