BUAV reveals a cruel and illegal trade in owl monkeys

The BUAV has carried out an investigation into the trade in owl monkeys in Colombia and Peru. We have revealed the cruel trapping of these wild animals, and the destruction of their rainforest habitat. These primates have been captured and used for research in Colombia.

The evidence uncovered by the BUAV shows that owl monkeys from Peru have been trapped and exported to Colombia despite a ban implemented on the export of primates by Peru in 1974. Both countries, being Parties to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), are obliged to report any international trade in these species. No trade in Peruvian owl monkeys between Peru and Colombia has been reported by either country. 

The BUAV has been working with and supporting the efforts of primatologist, Dr. Angela Maldonado, Scientific Director of Fundacion Entropika (an organisation seeking to protect Amazonian wildlife) who has been campaigning for many years to end the capture and trade in owl monkeys. 

Please support our call to the Colombian and Peruvian authorities to end this cruel trade and stop issuing trapping permits. Furthermore, urge the Peruvian authorities to enforce its ban on the export of primates.
