Despite calls from animal protesters to end testing on animals, their use in medical research reached 3.2 million last year, according to the latest Home Office figures.

Call for CITES to investigate Cambodia’s primate trade
The BUAV is calling on CITES (the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) to conduct an inquiry into the trapping and farming of long-tailed macaques in Cambodia. The call follows the findings of the BUAV’s investigation into the trade in long-tailed macaques for the international research industry. The BUAV report released on the 24th November raises serious concerns, regarding the cruelty involved in the trade and the conservation status of the long-tailed macaque.

The findings include shocking never-before-seen undercover video and photographic evidence of the suffering endured by monkeys trapped in the wild in Cambodia to populate appalling industrial-scale factory farms which supply the global animal testing industry, including Europe.

Airlines refuse to transport primates for research following public outcry
The BUAV has today applauded those airlines that have responded to public concern and stopped transporting primates destined for the research industry. An extensive analysis carried out by the animal protection organisation as part of its promotion of cruelty-free consumer choice has revealed that major airlines including US Airways and Eva Air have pulled out of the business while some of the world's largest airlines, including United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Northwest Airlines, Qantas Airways, South African Airways, Delta Airlines and China Airlines have re-confirmed their commitment to eliminating 'cargo cruelty' by opting out of carrying non-human primates as freight for the research industry.

BUAV response to LASA/APC Laboratory Animal Suffering report
BUAV Chief Executive Michelle Thew said: ‘The BUAV has long been calling for retrospective assessment and reporting of lab animal suffering so strongly welcomes the recommendations in today’s report from the LASA/APC working group as a step in the right direction. Where research is reported in journals, full information about animal suffering should be given, and retrospective reporting should improve the annual statistics issued by the Home Office.
