BUAV expresses disappointment at a lack of progress by government in reducing animal suffering
The Government has released the latest statistics for experiments carried out on animals. The BUAV is extremely disappointed by the lack of a meaningful drop in the numbers for 2009, following the massive 14% increase during 2008. There were over 3.6 million experiments started on animals in 2009, a fall of only 1%.

Household product testing ban imminent – as General Election candidates back BUAV’s call to end cruel animal tests
In the run up to the Election, the BUAV has sent a questionnaire to all parliamentary political candidates from the main parties to gauge their views on animal research, including household product testing. So far over 435 candidates have responded with an overwhelming 98% of them agreeing that household products should not be tested on animals. This response mirrors the support the BUAV has gained from all major political parties.

International acceptance of alternatives to cruel rabbit Draize eye test finally achieved
The BUAV today welcomed the publication of the OECD's (Organisation for Economic Cooperative Development) final guidance on how to conduct eye irritation tests without using live rabbits. If properly implemented, this move will prevent the untold suffering of thousands of rabbits throughout the world who would otherwise be forcibly restrained while potentially irritating chemicals and cosmetics were dripped into their eyes.
479 Draize eye tests took place in the UK during 2008 and around 4,000 rabbitsare used in the EU annually.
