Primate Breeding
A BUAV investigation in July 2007 exposed the expansion of a monkey breeding and supply centre in Spain for the European research industry. The long-tailed macaques originated in Mauritius and were shipped to Spain to be used as breeding stock. BUAV investigators found the monkeys housed in small concrete and chain link pens. The ground was concrete and there was no visible vegetation of any kind and no earthen floors. Attempts at providing some enrichment, such as fresh fruit and objects, were insufficient. Monkeys normally would be living amongst vegetation of various kinds and on a natural earthen floor. Such an unnatural environment is in stark contrast to living freely in the lush vegetation of Mauritius.
