Monkey Misery

A major BUAV investigation has uncovered, for the first time, a massive and expanding lucrative trade in primates for research from Laos to feed the international research industry. The investigation, which exposes the cruelty and suffering inflicted on thousands of primates, is the fourth major investigation carried out by the BUAV into the trade in macaques (Macaca fascicularis) for research in SE Asia. Yet again, it raises serious concerns to do with animal welfare, the conservation status of the macaque species in SE Asia and the implementation of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulations.

The BUAV believes that urgent action is needed by both CITES and governments to address these important concerns and to protect the indigenous populations of macaque species in SE Asia.
