Animal testing has increased for the sixth consecutive year
The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection has strongly condemned the increased number of animals used in experiments in the UK. Figures released today reveal that more than 3.1 million animals were used in tests in 2007, an increase of six per cent on the previous year. The number of actual experiments also increased by six per cent, to 3.2 million. Read more »

Update: New Henley MP says rise in animal testing under Labour is "unacceptable"
The new Conservative MP for Henley, John Howell, has told the BUAV that "a 15 per cent rise in the number of living animals used in scientific procedures since 2001 is unacceptable and the Home Office has shown scant regard for this spiralling trend." Read more »

Update: Labour's record rise in animal tests "unacceptable", says new Crewe & Nantwich MP
The new Conservative MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Edward Timpson, has told the BUAV that the Conservatives are "open" to the prospect of a ban on the use of animals to test household products. He also stated his party's commitment to new measures to reverse the upward trend in animal testing in the UK. Read more »

Ban lifted on export of wild monkeys for research
In July 2007 Malaysia announced it had lifted its long standing ban on the export of primates for laboratory research. The ban has reportedly been lifted because of increasing 'conflicts' between monkeys and people in urban areas. Experts, however, disagree entirely that this action is necessary or even effective. EU animal experiment statistics released demonstrating a rise in the total number of animals used
Despite European Commission and member state's individual promises to reduce and replace the use of animals in experiments, the total animals used in experiments in 2005 rose to 12.1 million. Read more »

The BUAV wins court case against the Home Office
The Government was found guilty, on 27th July 2007, of turning a blind eye to substantial suffering of animals in Home Office licensed experiments and consequently misleading the public over the extent of animal suffering in UK laboratories. Read more »
