Latest news on our campaign to end cruel mouse tests for botox!

The announcement today by Allergan that it is about to gain widespread EU approval for its in vitro test for Botox® and Vistabel® is welcoming news. We have been campaigning, with our colleagues at the ECEAE, for an end to the cruel use of mice in botox tests for a number of years and this is a significant development.

Many of you will remember the BUAV’s investigation at Wickham laboratories in Hampshire in 2009 and the appalling animal suffering we uncovered in botox poisoning tests carried out on behalf of Ipsen for their Dysport ® product. We are now calling on Ipsen and other companies manufacturing botulinum toxin products, such as Merz, to follow Allergan's lead. Please support our call

In other news, I am pleased to report that our Sov Nou Zako (Save Our Monkeys) campaign on Mauritius is successfully raising awareness of the plight of the long-tailed macaque. The Save Our Monkeys Team spent a few days distributing our new campaign leaflet. If you haven’t already done so, please visit our new tri-lingual website for the campaign (in English, Kreol and French) alongside a new Facebook page and Twitter account

We were very disappointed to learn of the small amount of money spent by EU countries to fund non- animal tests for chemical testing under REACH.  Please join us in writing to the relevant Ministers in your country responsible for REACH and ask your government to increase funding for alternatives to animal testing. In the UK, please write to the Secretary of State responsible: Caroline Spelman, DEFRA, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR.

Finally, next week I will be attending the biannual meeting of the ECEAE in Copenhagen. We will be discussing a variety of issues including our No Cruel Cosmetics campaign. Currently 160,102 people have signed our No Cruel Cosmetics petition, but we do need more. Please join us and say NO to Cruel Cosmetics in Europe by signing our petition.

Until next time…
