Adrian Sanders MP joins BUAV's No Cruel Cosmetics campaign

09/02/2011

Torbay MP Adrian Sanders has declared his support for BUAV’s No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end animal testing for toiletries and cosmetic products sold in the EU.

Contrary to popular belief, toiletries and beauty products that are tested on animals are still on sale and widely available throughout the EU, including in the UK. This is despite massive public opposition and an existing ban on conducting animal tests for cosmetics inside the UK since 1997, and in the EU since 2009.

BUAV has launched the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign in response to concerns of a delay to the EU ban on the import and sale of animal tested products in 2013. If delayed, hundreds of thousands of animals will continue to die in cruel cosmetics tests for beauty products sold in the EU. Over 12,000 supporters have already signed the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign petition, including Adrian Sanders MP, to be sent to the European Commission. You can sign the petition at www.nocruelcosmetics.org.

He joins Sir Peter Bottomley MP (Conservative), Annette Brooke MP (Liberal Democrat), Alex Cunningham MP (Labour), Nigel Dodds MP (DUP), and Kerry McCarthy MP (Labour) who have all pledged their support for the BUAV’s No Cruel Cosmetics campaign!

Adrian has also signed an Early Day Motion 1242 calling on the UK Government to hold Brussels to account and uphold an EU-wide ban on the sale of animal tested cosmetics and toiletries in 2013.

Please ask your MP to join Adrian in signing EDM 1242.

Adrian Sanders MP said: "It is surely impossible to justify animal testing for cosmetics and toiletries in this day and age. Not only do most of the public not want it, but there are perfectly adequate alternatives that don’t involve harming animals and will still deliver safe products. I fully endorse the BUAV’s campaign, and I hope that decision makers in the EU take notice."

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of BUAV, said: "We are delighted that Adrian Sanders MP has joined our campaign to end cruel tests on animals for beauty products sold in the EU. Testing on animals is cruel and unnecessary. Please sign our petition to the European Commission at www.nocruelcosmetics.org and look out for the Leaping Bunny when shopping for your cruelty-free guarantee."
