The BUAV has launched an important campaign to finally ban animal testing for household products. We are sure you feel as frustrated as we do that 10 years after a ban on cosmetics testing was agreed, the UK Government still allows companies to test ingredients for household products on animals. This allows painful experiments to develop products such as washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, furniture polish and air freshener, to continue to be licensed in the UK.
What do household products tests involve?
Experiments can involve rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice. Examples include defenceless rabbits having ingredients dripped into their eyes and guinea pigs having substances rubbed onto their shaved backs. This is despite the growing availability of non-animal methods.
Tests may also include force-feeding animals high doses of substances. As you can imagine this causes dreadful side effects including organ damage, vomiting and tremors. Even when the procedures are not fatal, animals are routinely killed afterwards.
The BUAV believes there is no justification for testing household products on animals, which is why, after many years of hard work, achieving a ban on these experiments is a top priority for 2008.
We know a ban is achievable…
