Time is running out. On the 2nd June ABX Air will be transporting hundreds of monkeys from China to the USA for research purposes. The BUAV is calling upon our supporters to write a polite letter to ABX Air urging them to not accept this shipment, and join the growing list of airlines that have taken a positive stance against the transportation of primates destined for the research industry.
BUAV investigations into the international transportation of primates have provided a disturbing insight into just how much these animals can suffer. Primates transported for the research industry are packed into small wooden crates, usually too small to allow them to stand up. They can endure inadequate ventilation, noise, temperature fluctuations and delays en route as they are shipped on extremely long journeys to research laboratories across the world.
Monkeys may become ill or die in transit. For others, anxiety and stress can lead to infection and the onset of disease which may remain latent until the animals reach their final destination. Conditions that have previously resulted in the death or euthanasia of monkeys imported by the USA included pneumonia, enteritis, gastroenteritis, dehydration, weight loss, poor body condition and bacterial infection.
The BUAV has lead the international campaign to end the shipment of monkeys; and as a result of our pioneering Cargo Cruelty campaign, many airlines have dissociated themselves from this cruel trade. With the majority of passenger airlines now refusing to transport primates, primate companies are having to commission cargo carriers.
Please join our call today, and add your voice to the growing number of people who want to stop this cruel trade that inflicts unnecessary suffering and cruelty upon these poor creatures and ask ABX to please not accept this shipment, and adopt a permanent policy to not transport primates for research.
