The BUAV has welcomed a decision by TNT, the international delivery company, to refuse to transport a shipment of primates from China to the USA for use in experiments. The shipment of monkeys was due to arrive in the USA last weekend on a cargo flight operated on behalf of a freight forwarding company. However, once the BUAV raised the alarm, and alerted TNT to what was about to happen, TNT responded by taking action to ensure the monkeys were not on board the flight.
Following the growing number of passenger airlines refusing to transport primates, the US primate research industry is finding it more and more difficult to enlist carriers willing to transport primates from China to the USA.
The BUAV congratulates TNT for responding immediately to our concerns and we are now urging the company to adopt a permanent policy not transport primates.
