The BUAV is urging holiday-makers to Mauritius to raise their concerns about the cruel monkey trade. Mauritius is a top holiday destination for families, sun-seekers and honeymooners alike. Yet most are unaware that there is a dark secret to this paradise - Mauritius is one of the world's largest supplies of long-tailed macaques for the research industry. Our recent exposé of the appalling slaughter of hundreds of monkeys, including pregnant females and babies deemed 'surplus' to requirements, at the Noveprim primate breeding farm in Mauritius caused an international outcry.
Increasingly, tourists are voicing their concerns about this trade; a trade that can only tarnish the international reputation of Mauritius as a holiday paradise. The BUAV is urging holiday-makers to contact their tour operators and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) and politely bring to their attention the negative impact the monkey trade is having on Mauritius as a holiday destination.
Please also sign our global AVAAZ petition urging the Mauritius Prime Minister to ban the breeding and export of primates for research.
