BUAV welcomes the appointment of Tonio Borg as Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy!

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), for which the BUAV is Secretariat, has welcomed the appointment by the EU Council of Tonio Borg as the new Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs. He will serve in this post for the remainder of the current term of office of the Commission (31 October 2014).

In his remit, Commissioner Borg will oversee the implementation of the Cosmetics Directive. He has committed to ensuring that the 2013 marketing ban for animal tested cosmetics comes into force without delay or exceptions. The ECEAE has welcomed Commissioner Borg’s written statements on this issue and hopes that he will keep his promise and ensure that cosmetic products cruelly tested on animals outside of the EU will not be imported starting from March 2013.

The ECEAE has led the campaign across Europe to end the import and sale of animal tested cosmetics. We have urged that there be no postponement or exceptions added to the 2013 marketing ban deadline, as that would lead to thousands of animals continuing to suffer in countries around the world for cosmetics sold within the EU. We have taken our message out to politicians, the public and industry achieving widespread support.
