Jim Dowd MP has tabled Early Day Motion 716 on behalf of the BUAV to highlight a recent opinion poll which showed low levels of public confidence in the regulatory system of animal experiments in Great Britain. Less than half of the respondents in the Ipsos MORI survey believed that the current rules on animal experiments are well enforced, and one third had a lack of trust in the regulatory system.
In response to the opinion poll, there has been a call for greater transparency around animal experiments, which is something the BUAV has been campaigning for over recent years. Successive Governments have been looking at the issue, which is governed by Section 24 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, but have yet to act. Although a recent opportunity to do so presented itself during the transposing of the new European Directive into UK legislation, the Government has instead opted to launch a separate review.
